Workshop Description:

Mid-May is the perfect time to photograph Shenandoah National Park in all of its spring splendor!  Located less than 2 hours driving distance from Washington DC, Shenandoah National Park offers photographers a rich diversity of subjects.  Waterfalls surging from the recent snow melt and spring rains, beautiful wildflowers, and new born animals such as bear and deer feeding on the lush new grasses are common photographic subjects this time of year.  This park has it all, from stunning sunrises and sunsets from one of the many overlooks to the lush rivers running through old growth forests and everything in between.

During the weekend we will cover a host of photographic topics including:

·         Understanding key elements of  good photographic composition

·         Reviewing concepts on proper exposure using your camera meter and histogram

·         Exploring the qualities and benefits of different lighting situations

·         Understanding your camera and photo gear to help you make better images

We will be based at Big Meadows Lodge in the Central District of the park so we have easy access to some of the best photo locations in the park. In many cases, our subjects will be within easy access of our vehicles.  In other cases we may “take the road less traveled” on one of the many trails through the woods to find some of our favorite locations.

There will be a maximum of 7 students per instructor, enabling a lot of individual attention.  To make the most of your photographic experience during the weekend, instructors Mary Louise and Chris will arrive on site several days before you get there to scout out the best locations for the time we are in the park together.  During this hands-on workshop, you concentrate on the getting the image, we concentrate on helping you.

Itinerary

Friday evening May 16th  Big Meadows Lodge

We begin with an evening presentation getting to know each other and discuss our photographic strategies for the weekend. This evening will set you up for a successful photo tour of image making and learning.  We will discuss with each participant what they want to get out of the weekend and how we can help everyone meet their photographic goals.

Saturday May 17th & Sunday May 18th  (All day)

We start our mornings in the predawn hours to prepare to photograph the sunrise over the valley from one of the many overlooks along the drive. Mid days we will stop for lunch and take 3 hours in the middle of the day to let you recharge your batteries or take a nice hike on one of the many trails. After the mid afternoon break we will head back out for some more photography and prepare to photograph sunset images to end the day. We depart after sunset on Sunday evening.

Workshop Description:

This workshop is for film and digital photographers who want to expand their photography skills beyond the use of their cameras’ automatic/program modes.  In this one-day intensive workshop participants will learn how to take greater control of their photography to realize their creative vision.  Key topics include:

  • Understanding the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO in achieving a well-exposed photograph
  • Understanding how the in-camera light meter works, how to interpret meter readings and set exposure compensation both manually and automatically
  • Understanding the concept of image depth-of-field, the four factors that impact it, and how to use the camera’s depth-of-field preview capabilities
  • Understanding how changes in shutter speed can be used for creative effects as well as when camera/lens stabilization techniques are necessary
  • Understanding how to use the camera’s various auto focus capabilities to photograph still subjects and track moving subjects, as well as practical techniques for taking advantage of a modern camera’s multi-focus point capabilities
  • Understanding what equipment and accessories are “must have”s and “nice to have”s for a variety of popular types of subject matter including nature, wildlife, and travel, as well as what features to look for when purchasing these items

While many of the features and concepts discussed are relevant to all cameras including point-and-shoot cameras, more advanced subjects will be applicable only to SLR cameras.  Participants are encouraged to bring their camera and it's manual to class.  Film photographers should bring one roll of 400 speed film while digital photographers should bring a blank memory card of at least 1 GB to class.

Due to the one-day intensive format, the workshop is lecture oriented with opportunities for participants to get comfortable with the discussed settings on their own cameras.  Instructors will help participants find all the settings discussed on their specific camera. Additionally, participants will receive a handout with several practice exercises they can complete on their own time to reinforce the concepts discussed in the workshop as well as instructor recommendations for further study.

Lunch and break time will offer the opportunity for participants to ask questions of both instructors on virtually any photography related topic.

Digital photographers will appreciate that this workshop is designed to dovetail with our “Using Your Digital SLR Camera” workshop.  The two workshops together provide an excellent foundation for beginner to intermediate digital photographers. These workshops are ideal training to consider before making a big photography trip.

“Chris and I are excited to offer this workshop.  Together we can share the kind of practical knowledge that can’t be found in a manual or book, it comes from our first hand experience working in the field” said instructor Mary Louise Ravese.

Previous students offer glowing reviews of the class and instructors. “Mary Louise has incredible knowledge and delivers it clearly, concisely and in a manner that’s easy to understand” says Esther Herbert of Hamilton, VA.  Kerry Ogata of Winchester,VA adds “examples were focused and illustrated technical info nicely.”

Workshop Description:

Now that you've purchased a digital camera you need to know how to use it effectively.  Digital cameras offer photographers several new advantages over film cameras like the flexibility to change certain settings per image instead of per roll of film, the ability to have instant feedback on an image and the ability to delete bad images on the spot.  However, with these new capabilities come new tools to master, new decisions to make before and after taking a picture and a plethora or supporting gadgets to decipher to make digital photography practical in the field or away from home.  For a photographer used to the film world, making the transition to digital can feel like they've taken one step forward and four steps back on the photography learning curve.

This workshop is designed to help photographers who know how to use a film camera understand what's the same, what's different, and what's new with their digital camera and how to use it to take better pictures.  Key topics include:

·                     how digital photographers approach a scene differently from film

·                     alternative shooting styles to take advantage of digital features

·                     new techniques for overcoming common photography issues

·                     new field/travel image and equipment storage solution choices

·                     how to choose new digital-only camera settings including file format based on intended image use

·                     why, when and how to adjust camera white balance for optimal picture color

·                     how to interpret image histograms and make adjustments for optimal image exposure

·                     digital photography beyond the camera

·                     overview of basic digital workflow from image capture to print

·                     understanding the use of profiles in achieving accurate print colors

·                     understanding how to size images appropriately for print, web or email use

While many of the features and concepts discussed are relevant to the majority of digital cameras including point-and-shoot cameras, more advanced subjects will be relevant only to digital SLR cameras.  Participants are encouraged to bring their digital camera, it's manual and a memory card to class. Instructors will help participants find all the settings discussed on their specific camera. In addition to better understanding how to use their camera, participants will gain insight on what accessories they may wish to purchase down the line and instructor recommendations for further study.  On-site lunch and break time will offer the opportunity for participants to ask both instructors questions on virtually any digital photography related topic.  All together this is an ideal class to consider before making a big photography trip.
